Canadian Critical Care Pediatric Subgroup (CCCPEDS)

The Pediatric Subgroup of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group was born out of the recognition that critically ill children differ from critically ill adults with respect to physiology, disease processes, drug metabolism, and outcomes. In addition, pediatric critical care research has unique considerations including ethics requirements for minors, smaller numbers of patients and lack of data for the vast majority of treatment used in children.

Who we are

The first pediatric study was formally undertaken in 2000, after Jacques Lacroix, Jamie Hutchison and Haresh Kirpalani obtained a CIHR grant to launch a “pediatric interest group” within the CCCTG. This initial group, now officially called the Canadian Critical Care Pediatric Subgroup (CCCPEDS), has grown significantly over the years. CCCPEDS is comprised of over 80 members from across Canada and includes research coordinators, physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. Our members lead high quality pediatric critical care studies in different research areas, including biomedical, clinical, population health, and healthcare systems. Current chair is Patricia Fontela (pediatric intensivist and PhD in Epidemiology, McGill University).

Becoming a member

In order to become a member of CCCPEDS, you must be a member of the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group. If you would like to join, please visit the Become a member page. Anyone joining CCCTG who lists pediatrics as their interest will automatically become a member of CCCPEDS. Membership in CCCPEDS is also open to any current CCCTG member who is interested in pediatric critical care research. For further information and to ensure you are on the CCCPEDS membership list, please contact Mary-Ellen Rayner.

Goals

CCCPEDS goals are:

  • To lead, collaborate and promote innovative pediatric critical care research studies
  • To build national and international pediatric critical care research collaborations
  • To develop and implement initiatives to increase efficiency in pediatric critical care research

Initiatives

CanPICC aims to develop and implement a Canadian pediatric critical care database to be used for a variety of multicenter and local research projects that will lead to major improvements in the quality of care provided to critically ill children in our country.

POPCORN is a national initiative that brings together pediatric health researchers from 16 research sites across Canada. It aims to establish an integrated and comprehensive research platform to answer key questions — rapidly and cohesively—required to inform child health policies, using COVID-19 as the proof-of-concept model.

More details about POPCORN can be found at https://popcornpediatrics.ca/.

The purpose of this initiative is to develop a common approach to data collection, analysis and reporting for pediatric critical care studies. Specifically, this initiative aims to standardize data elements and case report form organization and to provide definitions and supporting materials for data collection (severity tools, PROs). All materials produced by this group are freely available to CCCTG members and their collaborators. We also encourage sharing with external researchers.

For more information or to contribute to this initiative, please contact Shauna O'Donnell.

Research coordinators within CCCPEDS meet monthly on the first Thursday of each month from 13:00 to 14:00 EST to provide updates on ongoing trials and studies, and to share knowledge. These teleconferences are open to all members of CCCPEDS.

If you are interested in joining, please contact Katie O’Hearn.

The goal of this initiative is to accelerate the conventional systematic review process by “crowdsourcing” the most time intensive stages. Dr. Dayre McNally, in collaboration with the SLiDE Lab at Algonquin College, has developed an online platform to support this large team approach to systematic review called insightScope. insightScope has been used to rapidly complete multiple systematic and scoping reviews while fostering national and international collaboration and knowledge translation.

 For more, visit https://insightscope.ca.

The aim of the CCCPEDS Patient Engagement Platform is to create a large online community of PICU patients, their families and caregivers, clinicians and researchers to facilitate patient and family engagement in pediatric critical care research.

For more, see IC4U.

Achievements

Grants

Members of the CCCPEDS have collectively received over $30 million from funding agencies including but not limited to CIHR, FRSQ, PSI, the Thrasher Foundation, the NFRF, The Hospital for Sick Children, Heart and Stroke Foundation and the NIH to conduct research pertinent to critically ill children.

Publications

CCCPEDS members lead innovative and patient-centered research that is anchored in rigorous methods and multidisciplinary collaboration at national and international levels. Through their research programs, they have changed practice of pediatric critical care around the world by using high quality methods to evaluate a variety of interventions, including blood transfusions, use of hypothermia after traumatic brain injury, use of vasopressin in pediatric septic shock, and early warning systems.

Over the years, the scope of the research performed by CCCPEDS members has expanded. Collectively, we have expertise in a multitude of research areas and methods, including biomedical, clinical, population and healthcare systems research, and quantitative and qualitative methods.
