The Reducing Unnecessary Blood Tests in the Critically Ill (RUBIC) research program is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary and multifaceted endeavor aimed at building a rigorous evidence-based case for the de-adoption of unnecessary blood tests in the ICU.

The 4-part RUBIC program has the following objectives: 1) To audit current practices related to blood testing in 15 ICUs across Canada, 2) To systematically review the literature related to interventions that aim to reduce blood testing in hospitalized patients, 3) To convene an expert consensus stakeholder panel and generate an evidence-based list of blood test ordering practices for ICU patients, and 4) To develop a protocol for a multifaceted knowledge translation intervention to decrease unnecessary blood testing in ICU.
