Anti-Thrombotic Therapy to Ameliorate Clinical Complications in Community Acquired Pneumonia (ATTACC-CAP )
Ryan Zarychanski, Patrick Lawler, Alexis Turgeon, Sylvain Lother
CAP is a life-threatening lung infection and a leading cause of hospitalization and mortality globally. Poor clinical outcomes are driven by maladaptive inflammatory and thrombotic host responses to infection, leading to micro- and macro-vascular thrombosis and organ dysfunction. In CAP caused by COVID-19, we demonstrated that therapeutic-dose anticoagulation with heparin reduced progression to organ failure and mortality in non-critically ill hospitalized patients. Whether heparin has a similar effect on other etiologies of CAP remains uncertain.
This trial is one of the first non-COVID CCCTG endorsed trials that aims to study a pre-ICU intervention for a life-threatening illness with the goal of preventing critical illness and improving outcomes.
