Implementation and impact of restricted family presence in the PICU during the COVID-19 pandemic

This is a six-phase research program exploring family presence in PICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have listed the six phases below. These studies are situated within a broader research program which aims to optimize family presence at the bedside in PICU.

Program objective: To develop consensus statements informed by stakeholder experiences and priorities that will enable PICUs to optimize family-centred care in any context.

Phase 1: Environmental scan of family presence policies and practice in Canadian PICUs
Phase 2: Impact surveys with clinicians, families, leadership
Phase 3: Qualitative interviews with clinicians, families, leadership
Phase 4: Restricted family presence in the PICU during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The lived experience of pediatric patients
Phase 5: Defining stakeholder priorities for family presence policy: A focus group study
Phase 6: National consensus conference to define consensus statements for consistent family presence in the PICU: A modified Delphi approach

As of July 2023, we are finishing data collection for phase 5 and enrolling for phase 6.
