Career Development & Mentorship

The next Residents Research Day will take place in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Monday June 13 2016.

The CCCTG Career Development & Mentorship subcommittee consists of CCCTG members and other clinician educators from across Canada who are responsible for coordinating the content of the annual Residents Research Day (see below).

Research Career Development Day

The CCCTG hosts an annual Research Career Development Day to promote research education for critical care trainees across Canada. The day consists of talks geared to trainees from CCCTG members on research-related topics such as:
  • Career planning
  • How to write a grant and manuscript
  • The role of the Research Ethics Board
  • Etc.
In addition, fellows have the opportunity to present their research projects for feedback from the CCCTG membership on issues such as methodology, statistics, patient recruitment, etc.

The next Research Career Development Day will take place at the Auberge Lac à l'Eau Claire, St-Alexis-des-Monts, Quebec on June 12-13, 2017.

The Research Fellowship Award

The Fellowship Award program provides support for highly qualified candidates in the areas of critical care that are relevant to the CCCTG at the post-PhD degree or the post-health professional degree stages to add to their experience by engaging in health research in Canada. 

As funding permits, the total amount available for this funding opportunity is $100,000 over 2 years.  The CCCTG hopes to provide up to 2 Fellowship awards. 

The Critical Care Strategic Clinical Network (CCSCN), Alberta Health Services, is collaborating with the CCCTG to build research capacity in Alberta.  The CCSCN will contribute matched-funds to successful applicants to conduct their training at an institution in the Province of Alberta with the maximum amount of half a single award.  The total amount available from CCSCN is $50,000.  CCSCN will give preference to applicants initiating new research programs.

The Early Career Research Grant

The Canadian Critical Care Trials Group (CCCTG) established Research Grants to provide funding to support the research activities of new critical care investigators at the beginning of their research career, and who are members of the CCCTG. 

As funding permits, the total amount available for this funding opportunity is $30,000.  The CCCTG expects to fund two grants of up to $15,000 each for a research study that directly relates to the practice of critical care. 

The Canadian Critical Care Forum (CCCF) has generously donated $10,000 to the CCCTG to support critical care research.  In recognition to the CCCF, the top-ranked application will receive the CCCTG/CCCF Early Career Research Grant.

The Deborah J. Cook Mentorship Award

The Deborah J. Cook Mentorship Awards are given out to emphasize the importance of mentors in developing Canada's next generation of critical care researchers. The Awards will honour persons who have made exceptional contributions to the promotion of critical care research among Canadian fellows, graduate and post-graduate students, young investigators, research coordinators and allied health care providers.

As funding permits, the CCCTG hopes on one award annually of $500 each.

The Education Travel Award

Through this Education Travel Award, the CCCTG seeks to emphasize the importance of developing Canada's next generation of critical care researchers and to encourage critical care trainees to attend the Residents Research Day.

As funding permits, the total amount available for this funding opportunity is $5,000 per year.  The CCCTG hopes to provide up to 10 awards annually.
